Meta stops work on Apple Vision Pro competitor

Meta has reportedly stopped work on its Apple Vision Pro competitor, codenamed La Jolla. Development began in November last year and it was supposed to be released sometime in 2027. That is apparently over. According to a new report, the reason for the project’s cancellation is that the headset used MicroOLED displays. This increased costs significantly more than Meta had originally planned. At the beginning of development, the goal was to keep costs under $1,000.

The Apple Vision Pro for $3,500 was not exactly a complete success either. And if even Apple can’t make a high-priced device a bestseller, then that could be an indication that the market is simply too small. Especially if in the future there will even be two high-end headsets competing for the few buyers.
Referring to the news of the La Jolla headset’s cancellation, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said, “We have a lot of prototypes in development all the time. But we don’t put all of them into production. Some we develop, some we abandon. This happens all the time, and stories based on talk of a single decision will never paint the real picture.”
While the high-end headset may have been canceled, Meta is still working on a cheaper Quest, codenamed Ventura, that could be released later this year. Meta is also expected to unveil new AR glasses next month, while the Quest 4 is set to launch in 2026.
