New Meta AI image editing tool can access your Instagram photos

Meta is introducing a new feature that allows users to leverage public Instagram posts and Reels to generate AI-generated content. This feature is enabled by default.

If your Instagram account isn’t private, you can enable sharing in your settings to allow anyone to create content on Meta AI using your photos and videos. This option was added to support Meta’s new image generation model, “Muse Image.” Currently being rolled out across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta AI, Muse Image uses images from Instagram accounts that are tagged with an @ symbol. The company describes Muse Image as follows:
“You can also link Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app via @-mentions to directly integrate specific Instagram profiles into your images. Whether you want to design a custom invitation, develop a collaborative creative concept, or create a personalized graphic, linking a username allows Meta AI to use public photos to create a visual element that you can post directly.”
An Instagram help page explains that content on public Instagram accounts can be used to create content with AI features and that you will not receive a notification if someone uses your content to create an AI image.
Meta can use all public Instagram content
If your account is public: Anyone on Instagram can reuse all or part of your Reels, feed videos, and photos shared after the introduction of the reuse feature. Reels, feed videos, and photos can be reused in features like Remix, Sequence, Templates, and Stickers. Additionally, other users can create their own content from your Instagram posts using AI features.
Meta enables all public Instagram accounts by default, but there is an option to disable AI permissions. In the Instagram app settings, scroll to “Share & Reuse” and then disable “Posts” and “Reels” under “Allow others to create and reuse your content on Instagram and with Meta’s AI features.”
Disable this setting now if you don’t want your content used to create AI-generated images, as AI-generated content already created will not be deleted. Muse Image is still being rolled out, and the option to disable AI usage is not yet available. You may not see the option to disable it immediately. Private Instagram profiles are not included in Muse Image.
The company plans to expand Muse Image to Facebook and Messenger soon, enabling advertisers and agencies to create content with Muse Image in the coming weeks. Development of a Muse video feature is also already underway.
