Apple MacBook Pro 14 M5 in the teardown test
The repair site iFixit has just conducted one of its device teardowns on the new Apple MacBook Pro 14 M5, which Apple released last Wednesday. Not surprisingly, there are few changes to the device, as the only new features are the new M5 chip and a faster SSD. However, iFixit has found some subtle improvements in terms of repairability.
The Apple MacBook Pro 14 M5’s case is still secured with P5 screws, and replacing the battery is more complicated than necessary because Apple only sells the battery as part of the main case, which also includes the keyboard.
To access fans, ports, and other components inside the MacBook Pro, the motherboard must be removed. In fact, according to iFixit, replacing the battery according to Apple’s official repair instructions requires removing virtually every component of the MacBook Pro.

On the positive side, iFixit has determined that the trackpad no longer needs to be removed to access the tabs on the central battery cells—a small but useful update. The MacBook Pro features a new 72.6 Wh battery, which has a slightly higher capacity than the 72.4 Wh battery in the previous MacBook Pro M4. This battery finding is somewhat odd, as Apple’s own specifications page still lists a 72.4 Wh battery.
Since little has changed in the repair of the Apple MacBook Pro 14 M5, iFixit gave the device a repair rating of 4 out of 10.
