Samsung Galaxy A55 Geekbench test: Xclipse 530 GPU confirmed
Last week, Samsung’s upcoming top mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy A55, appeared for the first time on the Geekbench benchmark testing platform. However, the Exynos 1480 chipset under the hood was not tested directly in the A55. Instead it was some kind of test platform. That’s changing today, as a real prototype of the A55 has now made it to Geekbench. The test confirms the processor performance on the one hand and the Xclipse 530 graphics unit on the other.
The Samsung Galaxy A55’s Exynos 1480 chipset takes over from the Exynos 1380 in the Galaxy A54 and the 1280 in the A53. In contrast to its two predecessors, the new model will not use a Mali GPU. Instead, Xclipse 530 graphics based on AMD’s RDNA2 technology takes over the drive, which today’s benchmark test confirms. Xclipse GPUs have previously been reserved for Samsung’s top smartphones like the Galaxy S22 Ultra with its Xclipse 920 graphics.
Theoretically, the Samsung Galaxy A55 could even offer ray tracing in games. However, this is still a premium feature. Therefore, manufacturers will probably continue to limit it to their premium smartphones for the time being. Still, the Xclipse 530 is likely a more powerful GPU than previous chips in the A5x series. On the CPU side there are also a few improvements compared to the Exynos 1380, but nothing earth-shattering. The bottom line is that the A55 managed a single-core score of 1,127 and a multi-core score of 3,090 in the benchmark test. For comparison, the Exynos 1380 in the Galaxy A54 delivers around 1,108 single-core points and a multi-core value of 2,797 points.
Hardly anything has changed with the main core, which is crucial for single-core performance. So anyone who was hoping that the Galaxy A55 would finally bring a big leap in CPU performance to Samsung’s best-selling smartphone series will have to postpone that hope for at least another year.
The Samsung Galaxy A55 prototype that ran the Geekbench test had 8 GB of RAM on board. This was the maximum configuration on the Galaxy A54. According to previous rumors, the new model will feature a 6.5-inch OLED display with an FHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. There is a 50 megapixel main camera and support for 25 watt wired charging. However, you have to get the appropriate charger yourself.
