Facebook Passkeys now available for iPhone and iPad
Meta has announced that Facebook has added passkey support, making it easier to log in securely without a password. Passkeys are compatible with all Apple devices, so iPhones and iPads can use passkeys instead of passwords to log in.
Passkeys will be available on iOS devices “soon,” and Meta will roll out support for Messenger in the coming months. The same passkey set up for Facebook will also work for Messenger once Messenger passkey support launches. Meta states that passkeys are only available on mobile devices for now. Therefore, a username and password are still required to log in to the Mac.
Apple devices have supported passkeys as an alternative to traditional passwords since 2022, and websites have increasingly added support in recent years. Passkeys use on-device authentication, such as Face ID or Touch ID, instead of a password for account verification.
Passkeys are more secure than passwords and protect users from phishing, malware, and other attacks designed to gain access to online accounts. Passkeys function as a two-key authentication system, requiring an on-device key to match an account key. Because the second key is stored on the device, no malicious individuals can steal login credentials.
Facebook Passkey is stored in the Passwords app
On Apple devices, passkeys are securely stored in the Passwords app and synced across all Apple products.
According to Meta, users can set up a Facebook Passkey by accessing Account Management in the Settings menu and selecting “Passkey” under “Password & Security.” When logging into Facebook, users may also see a prompt to upgrade to a passkey.
