Apple iPad Pro Fold features under-display Face ID
Previous speculation suggested that Apple is working on a foldable iPad Pro. Today, a new rumor claims that the Apple iPad Pro Fold prototype will feature under-display Face ID technology. According to popular Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, one of Apple’s prototypes has a foldable 18.8-inch display with a “metal superstructure lens” that integrates the Face ID components for facial recognition under the display.
There have already been several rumors suggesting that a foldable iPad or MacBook is in the works. Whether it will be an iPad Pro Fold or a Mac is still unclear and also depends on which operating system Apple chooses – iPadOS 18 or macOS Sequoia. A Face ID under-display solution has also been circulating for years for the next iPhones, but has not yet come to fruition. Today’s rumor is the first to mention under-display Face ID in connection with Apple’s foldable device plans.
According to market research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Apple plans to launch an 18.8-inch iPad Pro Fold with an OLED display in 2027. Separately, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed in May last year that LG will start mass producing displays for a MacBook Fold in the fourth quarter of 2025. The dimensions are said to be 18.8 or 20.2 inches.
Apple iPad Pro Fold not until 2028?
A December report from the Wall Street Journal also claimed that Apple is working on a larger foldable device that “will serve as a laptop” and could unfold to a size of around 19 inches. And well-known Apple journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg also wrote in December that a foldable iPad was “in development.” According to Gurman, the “giant” tablet will not be launched until 2028 and will not have a fold, but will be made from a single piece of glass.
Apple is also said to be working on a foldable book-style iPhone with a crease-free display, which is due to be launched at the end of next year. Due to space issues, the iPhone Fold could use Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID, similar to the latest iPad Air and iPad Mini models.
