Samsung is already working on the Exynos 2800 chipset for the Galaxy S28

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy S26+. In some markets, both models are powered by the company’s own Exynos 2600 chipset. According to a new report from Korea, Samsung is already working on the Exynos 2800, which is expected to debut in the Galaxy S28 series in 2028.

Rumors suggest that Samsung will manufacture the Exynos 2800 using a 2nm process (more precisely: SF2P+). Samsung aims to finalize the chipset design within a year and deliver the schematics to contract manufacturers. The contract manufacturer will then produce several generations of prototypes, refining them sequentially. Only after this process will mass production of the chip begin.

Samsung Exynos 2800 not yet using the 1.4 Nm process

The Exynos 2800 is reportedly codenamed Vanguard (the upcoming Exynos 2700 is called Ulysses). Samsung had originally planned to switch to a 1.4 nm process starting in 2027, but is now focusing on stabilizing and optimizing yield instead of miniaturizing transistor size at all costs. SF2P+ is an interim solution until the 1.4 nm process is ready for use by 2029 at the latest.

The same source claims that the development of the Exynos 2700 proceeded smoothly thanks to the continued use of the 2nm process. According to a representative of the semiconductor industry, Samsung considers it impossible to maintain the same pace of miniaturization of mobile chipsets every year.

Instead, the company will also focus on the joint optimization of design technology – that is, the optimization between semiconductor design and manufacturing process technology. This will be applied to new processes that, due to their low level of technological maturity, are unfavorable for increasing yield.
