Apple iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max to get new Samsung M14 OLED displays
The upcoming Apple iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first Apple smartphones to use Samsung’s new M14 OLED display. This is according to a new report from the South Korean news portal ETNews. According to this, Samsung’s M-series OLED panels are intended for flagship smartphones. The “14”, on the other hand, refers to the number of high-performance materials needed for production. According to the report, M14 is the first series of its kind. Samsung developed the panel with the aim of offering superior brightness and durability.
According to reports, Samsung has already placed the first production orders for the M14 materials. The displays are expected to go into mass production for the Apple iPhone 16 Pro models in the second half of the year. Otherwise, only Google is planning to use M14 panels for the Pixel 9 series in 2024.
An earlier report from China claimed that this year’s Apple iPhone 16 Pro models will have a typical SDR brightness of up to 1,200 nits. That would be a 20% increase over the current iPhone 15 series, and Samsung’s new displays could be the reason for the increase. However, the maximum HDR brightness should remain at 1,600 nits, the same as the current iPhone 15 Pro.
Another rumor from last year claimed that all Apple iPhone 16 models will get the new microlens OLED display technology. They offer improved brightness and lower power consumption. However, it is not clear so far if this is specifically related to the M14 panels.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have larger displays than the iPhone 15 Pro models, according to multiple sources. The 16 Pro climbs to a diagonal of 6.27 inches (rounded up to 6.3). The iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to climb to a size of 6.85 inches (rounded up to 6.9). The iPhone 16 series will launch in the fall, around mid-September, according to Apple’s normal pattern.
