Apple iPhone 16 Pro: New cameras and brighter displays

The Apple iPhone 16 Pro is set to get a significant camera upgrade. The Retina displays are also getting brighter.

According to a new tip on Weibo, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro is getting a major camera upgrade. In addition to a new 48 megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with better image quality, the smaller Pro is also expected to adopt the 5x tetraprism telephoto lens of the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year.

The new tip confirms previous rumors about a 5x zoom camera on the Apple iPhone 16 Pro from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The same report also discussed a possible 48 megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. However, the new Weibo post clarifies that the 16 Pro Max will not receive a zoom upgrade. This means that the two Pros this year would have an identical telephoto camera setup.

iPhone 16 Pro with 20% brighter display

However, there is a second new rumor from China. Weibo user Instant Digital thinks he knows that the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will get 20% brighter displays. It refers to the typical brightness and not the maximum value for HDR content. The iPhone 15 Pro achieves a typical brightness of 1,000 nits, correspondingly the iPhone 16 Pro reportedly has 1,200 nits.

The peak mode for maximum brightness apparently remains the same, although there might be some confusion with the numbers. Manufacturers juggle various modes – manual brightness, typical brightness and brightness in “high brightness” mode. The latter is activated in “automatic brightness” mode when you are outside on a bright, sunny day, for example. There’s also HDR peak brightness, which can be much higher than all other modes, but usually only applies to tiny areas of the display.

The source of this rumor claims that the Apple iPhone 16 Pro will have the same 1,600 nits peak in high brightness mode as its predecessor. In fact, the predecessor manages up to 2,000 nits, so you should obviously treat the report with caution at first. Especially since this source has a rather mixed track record when it comes to Apple leaks.

On the other hand, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Apple made the iPhone 16 Pro’s display brighter. After all, the panels in the Android world have been regularly setting new brightness records for months. Additionally, the typical brightness of 1,000 nits has already remained the same since the iPhone 13 Pro was introduced in 2021. So it’s probably time for a raise.
