With the launch of the Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro and Mate 60 Pro+, Huawei resumed manufacturing 5G-capable HiSilicon Kirin chipsets for its smartphones. Now it looks like the company is planning to replace another chip with its own design. Namely the sensor of the main camera of the Huawei P70 series.

Huawei has long used Sony sensors in its phones, although with a customized design with two yellow subpixels instead of two green ones. According to tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the contract between Sony and Huawei is now expiring and has not been extended. In addition, the remaining stocks of Sony sensors in the Huawei warehouse have been used up.

The situation adds further fuel to the rumor mill that the upcoming Huawei P70 series will use self-developed sensors. The company recently had to replace another part of its camera system after its lens partnership with Leica ended. Instead, Huawei introduced the XMAGE platform including its own neural processor.

Huawei is also reportedly working on a new optical fingerprint sensor for the P70 series. None of this is official yet. At the beginning of next year at the latest, when the new Huawei smartphones are presented, the covers should fall. It seems as if the switch to its own components is now strengthening rather than weakening Huawei.
