Google plans to run a promotional video during this year’s Super Bowl game this Sunday that shows a fake AI scene. The video shows a business owner using Gemini, Google’s AI platform, to generate a website description. However, the text that Google claims was written by Gemini was on the company’s website as early as August 2020, according to the Internet Archive, at least three years before the launch of Google’s AI service. This proves that the AI text allegedly used on Wisconsin Cheese Mart’s website was not created by Google, as the Californians claim in the video.

Google is running a series of ads for Super Bowl 59 that highlight how Gemini AI is being used by small businesses across the country. In this ad, Wisconsin Cheese Mart allegedly used the AI to help write copy for its Gouda cheese. Google had already been criticized for an error in the ad when it stated that Gouda accounts for “50 to 60 percent of global cheese consumption,” which is false. Google removed this data from the ad and it has also been removed from Wisconsin Cheese Mart’s website.

Cheese ad is not a Gemini hallucination

Meanwhile, Google continues to claim that Gemini wrote the product description for Gouda cheese that was part of the website and TV commercial. While the video shows the creation of the description, Jerry Dischler, president of Google Cloud Apps, wrote in a tweet (now deleted) that the statistic removed from the ad showing that Gouda accounts for 50 to 60% of global cheese consumption was not an AI hallucination.

Hallucinations or not, AI models can give incorrect answers to queries, which is the general consensus. The Gemini website also notes that errors can occur, just as they can with ChatGPT and many other AI services.

After Wisconsin Cheese Mart suggested that Gemini create the product description without the stats, Google removed them from the ad, Google spokesperson Michele Wyman told The Verge. It’s important to note that Gemini did not write the original product description, as Google claimed in the original version of the ad, regardless of the controversy surrounding the Gouda stats.
