Apple Digital ID is now available for US passports
Apple has announced the introduction of digital ID for US passports. The so-called Apple Digital ID will be accepted at TSA checkpoints at over 250 airports nationwide for personal identity verification on domestic travel. Apple promises that more use cases for the digital ID will be added in the future. As mentioned, the digital ID is not a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel.
To add your passport to Apple Wallet, scan the photo page of your passport. You will then be asked to use your iPhone to read the chip embedded in your passport to verify the data. For further verification, you will also need to take a selfie and perform some facial and head movements during the setup process.
Apple Digital ID also works with Apple Watch
To use Apple Digital ID, double-click the side button or the Home button to open Apple Wallet, and then select “Digital ID”. Then you can hold your iPhone or Apple Watch to a reader and use Face ID or Touch ID for authentication. Apple states that in the future, digital ID will be available with “more select companies and organizations for identity and age verification”—in person, in apps, and online.
Your digital ID data is encrypted, and your passport information is stored exclusively on your device. Apple states that it cannot see when or where you present your ID, nor what data is displayed. You do not need to unlock, show, or hand over your device to present your ID. Only the information required for a transaction is displayed.
Apple first introduced the ability to add a driver’s license or national ID card to Apple Wallet in 2022, and this feature is now available in 12 US states and Puerto Rico.
