Apple Pay Express now on buses and trams in Edinburgh

Support for Apple Pay Express Mode has been integrated into the Edinburgh City tram network and the Lothian bus services in Scotland. This allows passengers to pay for their journeys without unlocking their iPhone or Apple Watch. A similar rollout took place in Greater Manchester in August. This marks the first time an integrated public transport system in the UK has supported Express mode outside of London.

Apple Pay Express mode not only allows users to pay for journeys without unlocking their iPhone, but also bypasses authentication via Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode. Users simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near the contactless payment terminal until a checkmark appears on the display.

In the Apple Wallet app, users can set a debit or credit card as their default transit option under “Express Travel Settings.” When Express mode is enabled, they simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a reader to pay—Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode is not required.

For most users, the card set as their default payment method in Wallet will be automatically used for Express mode. This can be changed at any time in the settings.

Express mode is available in major cities worldwide, including London, New York, Beijing, Tokyo and Sydney.
