Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G shows weak spots in DxOMark test

The current flagship of Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G, has just launched in Europe. It comes with various premium features, including a very bright AMOLED display, a long battery life, and of course the 200 megapixel main camera. In a test by the camera specialists at DxOMark, this camera with its 1/1.4 inch Samsung ISOCELL HP3 sensor would now have to show what it can do.


The high-resolution sensor certainly has its advantages, as both photos and videos are recorded in extreme detail. The camera on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ also takes much better pictures than the Redmi Note 12 Pro+. At least at low digital zoom, although the previous model uses exactly the same 200 megapixel sensor. The biggest point of criticism in the test was the lack of a real telephoto camera with optical zoom instead of digital zoom. DxOMark, on the other hand, rated the 8 megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture as average at best for an upper mid-range smartphone.
The tiny pixels of the main camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ cause more image noise in low light despite 16-in-1 pixel binning. The white balance didn’t always work reliably in the test either. The result was color casts in both photos and videos and unnatural-looking skin tones. The bokeh effect sometimes had visible artifacts, the video autofocus didn’t always work reliably, and the preview image in the camera app didn’t quite match the resulting photo.
Such weaknesses are not unusual for this price range. Nevertheless, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G only ended up in 75th place on the best list with a total of 121 points, directly behind the Google Pixel 6a and the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max.
