Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max: Second display also comes to the 18 series
Last month, the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Pro Max were launched in China. The Pro models both feature a second display on the back, embedded in the wide camera module.
We’ve seen rear displays before, especially from Xiaomi and the legendary Mi 11 Ultra. However, the Ultra’s second display remained an exception and never made its way to other Xiaomi phones in the series, nor to future generations. Given this, one might have considered this latest version on the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max to be just another fad/gimmick that would be forgotten by the time the Xiaomi 18 series is released. Fortunately, that’s not the case.
Xiaomi President Lu Weibing has confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will also feature a rear display. In fact, the Chinese company wants to go even further and increase its investment in research and development to make the auxiliary displays even more useful by adding more software features.
Xiaomi 17 Pro secondary display with 120 million euro development costs
Xiaomi has apparently already invested 1 billion CNY (120 million euros) in the research and development of the 2.1-inch LTPO AMOLED display of the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max. It’s all paid off—and it’s all worth it! According to reports, a new sales record was set in the first 5 minutes of availability, and then 1 million shipments were reached in record time.
Total sales of the Xiaomi 17 series increased by 20% compared to the previous generation, and the Pro series saw sales triple those of the Xiaomi 15 Pro. One of the new features coming soon to the back is real-time translation, which will arrive with an update at the end of this month. Xiaomi aims to add new features every month.
