Apple MacBook Air M4 finally supports 3 displays

The new Apple MacBook Air M4 has a very useful upgrade: It finally natively supports up to two external displays in addition to the notebook’s integrated display. This includes another advantage – you can use the new MacBook Air with two external displays without having to open the laptop.

Quote from Apple’s technical specifications for the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air:

“Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the integrated display with 1 billion colors and: Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60 Hz.”

The upgrade had been looming for a long time if you take a closer look at the development of the Apple MacBook Air and the fine print. The first MacBook Air models with M1 and M2 chipsets officially only support one external display, while the MacBook Air M3 increased support to two external displays, but only with the lid closed. With the new model, a total of three displays are available – two external and the internal one of the MacBook when opened.

Apple MacBook Air M4: 3 displays without an additional adapter

MacBook Air models with an Apple chipset already worked with several external displays using DisplayLink adapters. But now there is also official plug-and-play support for two external displays with the lid open, which is a much easier option for many potential customers. The latest MacBook Pro 14 M4 also natively supports two external displays with the lid open.

The new Apple MacBook Air M4 can be pre-ordered now and will be released on Wednesday, March 12th.
