Next Apple MacBook Air to inherit MacBook Pro display
According to a new report from Korean website The Elec, the next Apple MacBook Air will implement the same display technology that lights up the MacBook Pro: an oxide TFT LCD panel. This is not good news for anyone who was hoping for an OLED MacBook Air. After all, the first rumors suggested that OLED panels would find their way into the new MacBook Air as early as 2027.
The alleged reason for choosing an oxide TFT LCD display is that OLED technology is still quite expensive in the laptop segment. In addition, Apple is not happy with the low sales of the new iPad Pro models, which are probably due to the high price. This is due to the expensive OLED displays, which would accordingly drive up the price of the next Apple MacBook Air.
Apple has therefore decided to use oxide TFT LCD displays as a temporary solution until it finds a way to reduce the production costs of OLEDs. There would apparently be enough time – the report suggests that an Apple MacBook Air OLED will not be launched until 2029.
Nevertheless, oxide TFT LCD displays have many advantages over the standard amorphous silicon TFTs currently used in the MacBook Air. They offer faster electron mobility, which enables smoother display and overall improved performance. With the current MacBook Pros with oxide panels, Apple at least cannot complain about sluggish sales figures.
