WhatsApp will stop supporting older Android devices in 2025
Meta has decided to stop supporting WhatsApp on old Android phones. More specifically, on devices that are more than 10 years old and still running Android 4.4 KitKat. Mobile phones that still run on this operating system version or older will no longer have access to WhatsApp starting January 1, 2025.
The reason for stopping support is the evolving features and functionality of WhatsApp. Meta wants to implement more sophisticated features, AI features, etc., which requires more modern hardware. Here are the most common smartphones being discontinued:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1. Generation), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Many people still have these types of devices in their drawers as backups. However, if you still use them as an everyday device, you should quickly start looking for a porting solution to transfer all your WhatsApp data to a newer phone. Otherwise, all media and chat history will be deleted after January 1, 2025.
Meta announced something similar for iPhones a few months ago – the end of support for devices with iOS older than version 15.1. However, the support period here runs until May 2025.
