Apple iPhone 17 Air and MacBook Pro 19 with new design
According to Aaron Tilley and Yang Jie of the Wall Street Journal, Apple is planning a series of “major design” and “format changes” for its iPhones over the next few years. In a new report, the two editors essentially confirmed the widely rumored Apple iPhone 17 Air with an “ultra-thin” design that is thinner than all current iPhone models.
The report did not mention specific dimensions, but previous rumors suggested the iPhone 17 Air could be between 5mm and 6.25mm thin. For comparison, the current iPhone 16 series starts at 7.8mm. The thinnest model ever was the iPhone 6 at 6.9mm, so the iPhone 17 Air would break that record.
In line with previous rumors, the report also said that the iPhone 17 Air would forego some features from the Pro models. This includes the camera system, which will be simplified without giving any further details. Therefore, the device will also be cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro, according to the report. According to the report, Apple also plans to launch two foldable devices later. One of the devices will essentially be the largest MacBook ever with a 19-inch foldable display, while the other is a foldable iPhone. The first Apple iPhone Fold is said to have an inward-facing, foldable main display that is larger than that of the 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max.
According to the report, Apple is aiming to release the foldable iPhone in 2026 or 2027, while the MacBook with a foldable screen will likely come later. Both devices have been rumored to be in development several times in recent years. According to a second report today, however, an Apple iPad Fold could be the first to hit the market.
Apple is said to have faced major challenges in developing a foldable iPhone, including the device’s hinge and the protective layer that covers the display. Apple had apparently once considered a foldable iPhone with an outward-facing display, but then decided on a large internal display, according to the report.
