Huawei today shipped the first units of its first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT Ultimate, in China. If you’re wondering if the device will ever make its way outside its home market, we have good news. The tri-fold will launch globally in the first quarter of 2025.

With a starting price of CNY 19,999 ($2,800/€2,550) in China, however, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is one of the most expensive smartphones money can buy. If we take into account price fluctuations between China and the rest of the world, that cost could rise to well over €3,000/$3,000 for international buyers.

First batch of Huawei Mate XT Ultimate already 1 million units?

The high price of the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate doesn’t seem to be hurting sales, however. Huawei says it plans to sell 500,000 units in China alone this year. A survey by the well-known tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo even shows that the forecast for 2024 has already been revised upwards to 1 million.

But of course it remains to be seen whether this initial demand for the Mate XT will continue. The initial hype will die down sooner or later, and the extremely high repair costs are likely to deter some potential buyers.

Sales in China have been running since September 20th, by the way. However, concrete figures on purchasing interest and sales figures are still missing.
