Apple in talks to invest in ChatGPT group OpenAI
According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, Apple is currently in talks to invest in the most exciting artificial intelligence company today – OpenAI.
The report did not say how much money Apple plans to invest in OpenAI, nor did it provide any further details on the content of the discussions. However, it did say that this latest round of funding would value the ChatGPT group at over €100 billion.
Apple previously announced that ChatGPT integration for Siri will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia before the end of the year. With user permission, Siri will then be able to display ChatGPT responses directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT will also be an option for Apple’s system-wide Writing Tools feature, which allows users to generate text and images. Apple said ChatGPT will run on its platforms using OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o model.
Apple iPhone, iPad and Mac users can use the chatbot for free without creating an account. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can link their accounts to access paid features on those devices. Apple said OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices and will obfuscate users’ IP addresses.
The first developer versions with Apple Intelligence features for testing launched with the iOS 18.1 beta last month. But ChatGPT integration is not yet available. Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max or a Mac, MacBook or iPad with an M1 chip or later. The device language must be set to US English. Additional languages will be supported over the next year.
Microsoft also plans to continue investing in OpenAI, the report said.
