New OnePlus 15 update brings 165 Hz to these three apps
OnePlus has released a new update for the recently launched OnePlus 15, which includes the usual performance improvements and bug fixes. However, there is one change not listed in the update log, which we believe is the most important.
Starting with version 16.0.1.305, OnePlus 15 users can now take advantage of the full 165Hz refresh rate in three additional apps. These include WhatsApp, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). Previously, this refresh rate was only available in a few games; all others ran at a maximum of 120 Hz.
However, there’s a catch. Besides the fact that the feature is only available in these three apps, you also need to enable developer options to access it, as it’s hidden there. While enabling developer mode is risk-free and straightforward, it can cause problems with certain apps, especially banking apps. These apps may stop working while developer mode is active.
OnePlus 15 with 165 Hz, but without dynamic refresh
Furthermore, the implementation of this feature is strange. Once this mode is enabled, these apps no longer have a dynamic refresh rate, and the display remains fixed at 165 Hz instead of dropping to 1 Hz when inactive.
It’s baffling why OnePlus has made things so unnecessarily complicated. The company could have simply included the option to activate the full 165Hz refresh rate in the refresh rate settings under the “Display & Brightness” menu. This menu is so well hidden that most users aren’t even aware of it. Anyone who does navigate there already knows what to expect with the higher refresh rate (and the smartphone could simply display a warning, as before). This way, the dynamic refresh rate could have been retained.
