Apple iPhone Pro from 2028 with tandem OLED displays
According to a new report from DealSite.co.kr, Apple could introduce tandem OLED display technology for its iPhone lineup as early as 2028, if panel supplier LG Display has its way. LG Display is currently the leader in tandem OLED technology and ranks first in the number of published US patent applications in this field with 348 patents.
The company is said to be actively pursuing the adoption of tandem OLED structures for future iPhones, specifically targeting iPhone models scheduled for release in 2028. However, the final decision rests with Apple.
Tandem OLED technology stacks two organic light-emitting layers on top of each other. This provides improved brightness, longer lifespan, and better energy efficiency compared to the single-layer displays currently used in iPhones. Apple is already using this technology in its M4 iPad Pro models, with LG Display supplying 65% of the panels, while Samsung received the remaining orders.
The technology has already proven itself in smartphones. Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor equipped its Magic6 RSR Porsche Design last year with tandem OLED panels from BOE.

LG Display is already preparing for potential capacity issues, as tandem structures allow stacking two Emission layers are required, which could reduce production throughput. If Apple ultimately decides to use tandem OLED panels in its iPhones, the company will likely rely on multiple suppliers to ensure production capacity and maintain price competitiveness. This suggests that Samsung and BOE could also be involved. As with any rumors that extend this far into the future, Apple’s plans could, of course, change.
