Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra to be only 7.6 mm thin
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, which was introduced last week, is 5.6 mm thick when unfolded. When folded, it is 12.1 mm thick. This makes it look pretty pale in comparison to some Chinese competitors. The Korean company’s next foldable could, however, be significantly slimmer. As KED Global reports, TM Roh, the president and head of Samsung’s MX team, has ordered a significantly thinner profile for the next foldable Galaxy smartphones. The team is to develop an “extra slim foldable smartphone” – is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra finally coming?
Citing industry sources, KED Global claims that Roh has set a rather ambitious goal for Samsung’s engineers. According to him, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra is to be as thin as the Galaxy S24, the slimmest model in the S24 series, when folded. The Galaxy S24 is 7.6 mm thin, while the S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra are 7.7 mm and 8.6 mm respectively.
Even if Samsung manages to match the S24 Ultra’s thickness, its next foldable device would be just 3.5mm slimmer than the Fold6 when folded. The Fold6, in turn, is 1.3mm thinner than last year’s Galaxy Z Fold5. The source also claims that the MX team is working on bringing the weight of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra down to under 239g. This would also make it lighter than the Fold6.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra and Z Fold6 Slim
Samsung is also expected to unveil a 10mm-thick Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim by the end of 2024, with subsequent models being thinner. The Slim also has an 8-inch main display, which would be larger than the Fold6’s 7.6-inch folding display.
In addition to developing a slimmer foldable smartphone, Samsung is also reportedly working harder on matching content. Discussions are currently underway with both Google and several Android app developers to better adapt apps to fold and flip smartphones.
