Samsung Galaxy Ring introduced for €449
The Samsung Galaxy Ring was announced back at MWC 2024. But it took almost five months for the full specs, pricing, and availability details to be revealed today at Samsung’s big Unpacked event. It may be the smallest member of the Galaxy wearables, but it’s arguably the most innovative of all Samsung’s new products at today’s Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris. The ring is the result of years of research and development in health and activity tracking. Samsung hopes it will be the next big thing in the world of health monitoring.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is available in black, silver, and gold, each based on a grade 5 titanium alloy. It comes in US ring sizes 5-13. The design of the ring is concave, with the sides tapering towards the center. The health tracking sensors, batteries, and charging pins are on the inside, hidden under a layer of epoxy resin.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is IP68 certified and waterproof up to 100 meters, so you can wear it while swimming without worry. The smallest Galaxy Ring in size 5 measures 7.0 mm x 2.6 mm and weighs just 2.3 grams. The size 13 version weighs 3 grams. Samsung initially supplies a free size set with every order. The samples should stay on the finger for at least 24 hours before you decide. You can also try out the different models in Samsung stores and decide directly on the right size.
The Galaxy Ring uses Bluetooth LE 5.4 to connect to smartphones running Android 11 or higher with the Samsung Health app. The good news is that you don’t need any additional subscriptions to access your health and activity data. The ring also supports pinch gesture control. You can press your thumb and index finger together while wearing the ring to control your Galaxy smartphone and take photos or turn off alarms. It’s also compatible with Samsung Find and can use its built-in LED lights to flash if it gets misplaced.
The ring tracks the standard health metrics. This includes heart rate via its PPG optical sensor and skin temperature thanks to an integrated sensor. Samsung is also leaning heavily on sleep monitoring with the Galaxy Ring. Accordingly, the design is kept fairly flat and the 2-3 gram weight is barely noticeable. Sleep monitoring includes an active sleep score with snore analysis. You also get additional metrics like movement during sleep, sleep latency, heart and breathing rate.
You also get automatic exercise detection with live heart rate monitoring and heart rate alerts. Samsung also integrates an energy score that takes your activity and sleep scores into account for a combined daily score of 100.
The smaller Galaxy Rings (sizes 5-7) have 17 mAh batteries that are rated for up to 6 days of use on a single charge. Sizes 8-11 have 18 mAh batteries that are also good for 6 days. From sizes 12 and 13, the cells deliver 22.5 mAh and thus a usage time of up to 7 days. Charging is done via a practical charging case, similar to wireless earphones. It has an additional 361 mAh, which should be enough for up to 20 full charges for the smaller ring sizes.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring costs €449/$399/£399 and can be pre-ordered from today. Open sales start on July 24.
