Sony Xperia 1 VII to get new telephoto and ultrawide cameras
A tipster from China has shared some initial information and renders on the Sony Xperia VII’s camera setup. There is a lot of room for doubt about the veracity of these rumors, as the tipster does not have a solid track record of leaks. Still, it is interesting to see what Sony might be planning with its next-generation Xperia flagship.
Reportedly, Sony will break with the vertical camera design of previous top models like the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 1 V after several years. The periscope telephoto lens will remain on the edge, while the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras will move further towards the center. One reason for the change is a new 1/2.3-inch telephoto sensor compared to the 1/3.5-inch sensor on the Xperia 1 VI. Another is, of course, that periscope telephoto lenses take up significantly more space than regular lenses due to their elongated design. Especially if, like the Xperia 1 VII, it is a zoom camera that will reportedly cover an equivalent focal length range of 70-200 mm.
The main camera is expected to retain its 1/1.3-inch sensor size, just like the current Xperia 1 VI. The ultrawide camera is also expected to get a larger 1/2.3-inch sensor. In addition, Sony is likely to use a two-layer transistor pixel technology for all three cameras on the Xperia 1 VII – the new, in-house Lytia sensors.
Finally, the new report also suggests that Sony will not launch an Xperia 5 VI this year. The Japanese may even discontinue the series of compact flagships altogether. This means that the Xperia 1 series is likely to be the only high-end smartphone range in Sony’s mobile business.
