Apple iPhone 16 Pro: Periscope telephoto and new ultra wide cam
Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has summarized the key upgrades for the 2024 and 2025 iPhone series in his latest report. Accordingly, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro inherits the tetraprism zoom camera with 120 mm focal length from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple is also planning to increase the display sizes of the Pro models to 6.27 inches on the Pro and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max. Both topics have circulated through the rumor mill for some time, but Kuo now confirmed them once again.
In addition, both Apple iPhone 16 Pro models will abandon the 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a 1/2.6-inch sensor and 1.4 µm pixels. Instead, Apple uses a new 48 megapixel ultra wide cam with 1/2.55 inch and correspondingly smaller 0.7 µm pixels. In the end, thanks to 4-in-1 pixel binning, you get exactly the same result: 12 megapixel photos with 1.4 µm pixels. The image quality should still be better, even though Apple wants to stick to the old 6P lens design.
The next big upgrade will be the selfie camera, but not yet on the iPhone 16 Pro. Instead, all iPhone 17 models will reportedly bring a new 24-megapixel front camera with a 6P lens. That would be a significant upgrade compared to the 12 megapixel 5P camera on current iPhones.
Kuo says Genius/Yujingguang will be the sole supplier of the new ultrawide and selfie modules. The company is expected to make significantly more sales than usual in the second half of 2024 and 2025. The new lenses also benefit from the fact that there is more space in the housing of the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max thanks to the larger displays.
