Apple is working on new battery technology for iPhone 17

Although Apple typically hires outside companies for manufacturing, the company tries to do as much of the engineering and design of its products in-house as possible. And according to ETnews, the focus of the company’s current research and development efforts is on the battery of the upcoming iPhone 17 in 2025.


The report suggests that Apple is experimenting with new materials for the cathodes – nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum. The new approach also allows Apple to significantly increase the silicon content of the iPhone 17 batteries. Silicon expands as it heats up during charging. But Apple has obviously found a way to mitigate the problem.
The new cathode mix promises improved battery density (i.e. higher capacity with the same volume) and faster charging at the same time. The tech giant is likely to use carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a conductive material, which will further boost battery performance.
The same report claims that the first devices, likely iPhones, with the new battery technology will hit the market as early as 2025. This suggests that development is already well advanced and the batteries could therefore launch in the Apple iPhone 17.
