Samsung Messages app will be discontinued in July
Samsung has announced that the default messaging app “Samsung Messages”, which is pre-installed on all Galaxy smartphones, will soon be discontinued. This move is not surprising, as most current Samsung devices already come with Google Messages pre-installed.
In a statement on its website, Samsung confirmed that the Messages app will be discontinued in July 2026. The company strongly recommends that users install Google Messages and set it as their default SMS app.
Samsung Messages app continues to work with Android 11
Samsung recommends that users check the exact shutdown date of the Messages app within the app itself. The company also pointed out that smartphones running Android 11 or earlier will not be affected by the shutdown and will continue to support the Samsung Messages app.
Since the Samsung Galaxy S25 series, together with the Galaxy Z Fold6, the Galaxy Z Flip6 and newer devices, Google Messages is pre-installed by default. In the US, Samsung began phasing out its messaging app with the Galaxy S22 series.
