Apple Wallet app gets Rivian car keys
Rivian will introduce a new feature for its second-generation R1S and R1T electric vehicles with a software update (version 2025.46) later this month. A specific date was not given.
This feature allows you to remotely control, lock, and start your second-generation R1S or R1T using your iPhone or Apple Watch, without needing the Rivian app. Express Mode is also supported, allowing you to keep your iPhone in your pocket while approaching the vehicle, as unlocking with Face ID is not required.
Rivian is implementing a newer version of the feature using Ultra Wideband technology for passive access, eliminating the need to hold your iPhone near an NFC reader.
Apple Wallet works for up to five hours with your iPhone powered off
If your iPhone’s battery is depleted, a power reserve feature ensures that your Apple Wallet key can still be used for up to five hours after the device is turned off.
You can share an Apple Wallet car key with up to eight family members and friends via AirDrop or any messaging app, such as Messages or WhatsApp. However, the Apple Wallet car key feature is not supported on first-generation Rivian R1S and R1T models built up to and including the 2024 model year.
Despite integrating digital car keys into the Wallet app, Rivian continues to reject CarPlay. The electric vehicle manufacturer does, however, offer an integrated Apple Music app as part of a Connect+ subscription, which costs $14.99 per month or $149.99 (€129) per year.
