Epic Games has scored another victory in its legal battle with Apple, this time in Australia. The case stemmed from Epic’s desire to use an alternative payment system for Fortnite on Apple devices. At the end of 2021, a US judge ruled that the American company must allow alternative in-app payment methods. A similar case was also heard in Australia.

Epic’s first victory came last year when an Australian court ruled that both Apple and Google had violated local antitrust laws. Google, of course, played a part – both companies removed the popular game from their respective app stores because of its use of V-Bucks (an in-game currency). However, Fortnite returned to the app stores in several regions (though not Australia), and now the Australian Federal Court has handed Epic – and all iPhone users – an even bigger victory.

Apple must allow third-party stores from March 1, 2027

Apple must allow users to install apps from third-party stores and websites starting March 1, 2027. An extension until May 3 is possible, but requires prior court approval. This court order is based on last year’s ruling.

Specifically, Apple must allow third-party app stores and the sideloading of apps. Alternative payment methods, including external payment links, must also be enabled. At the same time, fees for alternative distribution and payment methods must be capped. Furthermore, other obstacles must be removed, such as opening up the APIs necessary for the operation of third-party app stores.

This applies to users with Australian accounts. Apple told Reuters it will appeal the decision. However, Fortnite will soon be available again, at least in the Australian App Store.

Third-party app stores are already permitted in the EU, Brazil, and Japan. However, Epic Games remains dissatisfied with the implementation in the EU, so the story isn’t over yet. Alternative app stores are (still) not allowed in the US, but developers are now permitted to display external payment links and offer alternative payment options to users.
