Prime Video’s new Fallout TV series scheduled for release in 2027

Prime Video’s “Fallout” is a huge success for Amazon: The first season garnered over 100 million views. Critics were also enthusiastic, and the series received 17 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins (known from “The Ghoul”). The second season was largely well-received, and anticipation is high for the third season of “Fallout,” which is currently in production.

Naturally, Amazon MGM wants to capitalize on the success of Fallout and is preparing a spin-off: a game show that seems to completely misunderstand the original. On Friday, Amazon released the first teaser for “Fallout Shelter: The Experiment,” a reality competition series that will premiere on Prime Video early next year.
The teaser trailer reveals few details, but confirms that Bethesda Game Studios, Kilter Films, and Studio Lambert (The Traitors, Squid Game: The Challenge) are involved in the project. “The world is ending. The competition is just beginning,” reads a Pip-Boy display. The most important news: the series has an official release date – January 13, 2027. It was previously announced that the series will consist of ten episodes.
What else do we know about the series?
Here is Amazon’s official description of Fallout Shelter: The Experiment:
“In the bombproof bunkers of Vault-Tec, Fallout Shelter places a diverse group of participants in an immersive, high-risk world inspired by the games’ signature dark humor, retrofuturism, and post-apocalyptic survival storytelling. Through a series of increasingly difficult challenges, strategic dilemmas, and moral choices, the participants must demonstrate their ingenuity, teamwork, and resilience as they fight for safety, power, and ultimately, a large cash prize.”

This new reality show is inspired by the 2015 building simulation Fallout Shelter, suggesting that the competitions will revolve around Vault Dwellers struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic nightmare world. Expect to see some blue jumpsuits.
A casting call for the show contains further details:
“The residents (participants) live together in a top-secret bunker and compete against each other in a series of games that test the seven core attributes of the Fallout world: Strength, Perception, Stamina, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck (S.P.E.C.I.A.L.). The games test not only the residents’ core attributes but also their loyalty and alliances. It’s a game of power, popularity, and social strategy, with a large cash prize at stake. But do you have what it takes to be the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Master?”
Although we haven’t seen anything concrete of Fallout Shelter: The Experiment yet, the premise is strongly reminiscent of Squid Game: The Challenge. That reality show took Squid Game, a cautionary tale about capitalist dehumanization, and turned it into a form of capitalist dehumanization itself. In this case, the series is a pitch-black comedy that explores a world where nationalism and corporate exploitation have led to global catastrophe – perfect material for a game show.
When will the other Fallout TV series return?
For those who aren’t interested in reality TV, there’s good news: Amazon has already announced that more episodes of the fictional Fallout series are in the works. The show was renewed for a third season in 2025, shortly before the second season aired from December 2025 to January 2026. Filming for the third season began in July 2026, so the series is expected to air sometime in 2027.
