Rockstar Games spent years building hype around Grand Theft Auto 6, with every trailer and update becoming a major event for fans. But what if this same hype were applied to a completely different video game? One starring a certain green ogre, perhaps?

This is apparently the idea behind the official announcement of Shrek 2 Remastered, which was presented with a trailer that adopts nothing less than the cinematic style of Rockstar’s GTA 6 marketing.

Shrek 2 Remastered, developed by Aspyr, will be released on November 10th for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The game first surfaced last month through a leaked achievement, followed by an early listing on the Xbox Store that revealed details of the improvements.

What you can expect from Shrek 2 Remastered

Shrek 2, originally developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision, is an action-adventure platform game based on the successful 2004 DreamWorks animated film. Players travel to locations such as Shrek’s swamp, Fiona’s castle, and the kingdom of Far Far Away, experiencing scenes from the film as well as additional sequences created specifically for the game.

Players can control Shrek and other familiar characters like Fiona and Donkey as they battle enemies and complete platforming challenges. The original game also supported a co-op mode, allowing up to four players to play together locally.

The remake brings the game to modern hardware with improved textures, an optimized user interface, reworked cutscenes, and 4K resolution. Additionally, there’s a photo mode and a cheat mode, allowing players to customize their gameplay. Perhaps the biggest addition is the online co-op mode. While the original offered local multiplayer, up to four players can now play together online.

From a franchise perspective, the timing also makes sense. Shrek 5 is scheduled for release in 2027 and offers fans the opportunity to relive the series’ heyday in the early 2000s before the ogre returns.
