The Saudi sovereign wealth fund Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners announced their acquisition of Electronic Arts in September 2025, but only officially finalized the deal on August 4th of this year. Since then, video game publisher EA has taken its first major step: laying off 3% of its global workforce.

The result is a heavy blow for EA employees, especially for the legendary RPG developer BioWare. BioWare has been permanently shut down, and EA has halted development of the new Mass Effect title. However, there is good news for Star Wars players: Star Wars Battlefront 3 does indeed exist and is currently in active development.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 is on its way

According to Variety, Cam Weber, President and Chief Studios Officer of EA, and David Tinson, President and COO, confirmed that the publisher is experiencing great success with first-person shooters in live-service mode, particularly Battlefield 6. In addition to other Battlefield titles, the executives also announced that EA will be bringing Respawn and DICE together for a joint project. Respawn is also working on the next installment in the Jedi games, Jedi 3.

Variety claims that multiple sources have confirmed the project is Star Wars Battlefront 3 from Lucasfilm Games. This appears to dispel rumors that Bungie, the creators of the popular sci-fi shooter series Destiny, will be developing Star Wars Battlefront 3. While this would seem logical given Bungie’s success with Destiny, DICE has always treated the modern versions of Star Wars Battlefront with relative care, and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

It’s been almost a decade since DICE released Star Wars Battlefront 2. The action shooter was set in the Star Wars universe and offered a single-player campaign where you followed Iden Versio, who evolved from the Imperial leader of Inferno Squadron into a tough but righteous soldier of the Rebel Alliance. In multiplayer mode, players could participate in epic battles across different eras, from the Clone Wars to the Age of Rebellion.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 received mixed reviews due to its pay-to-win mechanics and limited customization options; however, new updates helped the game regain popularity. Following the success of the second Andor season and the community’s engagement, the return of many players to the servers led to questions about whether there would ever be a Star Wars Battlefront 3.

Now that this is confirmed and Respawn – known for its multiplayer shooter experience with Apex Legends – is also supporting DICE, we can look forward to what the developers have planned for Star Wars Battlefront 3. Since 2017, additional eras have been added to explore, including the High Republic and Dawn of the Jedi. We’re eager to see which of these will make it into Battlefront.
