Apple iPhone Duo 2 prototypes with Face ID under the display

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Apple iPhone Duo 2 could feature Face ID. Prototypes already incorporate this technology beneath the outer display. In the latest episode of his podcast “Power On,” Gurman described Apple’s efforts to integrate facial recognition into the foldable iPhone. The company is reportedly testing the hardware for a successor expected this fall but hasn’t yet made a final decision on whether the feature will actually be released.

Like the iPad, the current first-generation iPhone Duo uses a fingerprint sensor integrated into the side button. Its slim design leaves little room for the depth sensors required for Face ID.
Apple iPhone Duo 2 could get Face ID and a telephoto camera
The news of the prototype appears to be a more concrete development of Gurman’s earlier prediction regarding future Apple iPhone Duo 2 upgrades. In September, he suggested that smaller components and advances in artificial intelligence could help Apple integrate Face ID and a dedicated telephoto camera into the third generation.

However, integrating Face ID requires miniaturizing key components such as the dot projector and infrared camera. Gurman also stated that Apple is considering introducing an action button on the Apple iPhone Duo 2, a feature currently lacking in the model.
The iPhone Duo is now gradually being shipped to those who pre-ordered it last week, and the first reviews have already been published. The general consensus is that it exhibits the typical weaknesses of a first-generation product, and most reviewers are not particularly impressed with the Touch ID sensor.
Depending on how you hold the device, it can be difficult to reach, and you also have to keep your finger on the sensor to fully unlock the phone. Consequently, there are currently loud calls for Face ID in the successor to the Duo.
