Product overview Bose Ultra Open Earbuds
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds are wireless open-ear headphones that deliver music without blocking the ear canal. Instead of traditional earbuds, Bose uses a cuff-shaped design that rests on the sides of the ear. This allows you to remain aware of your surroundings, while OpenAudio technology directs sound precisely to your ear. Additional features include Bose Immersive Audio, Bluetooth Multipoint, Snapdragon Sound, and a battery life of up to seven hours. The Ultra Open Earbuds are ideal for everyday use, the office, walks, and other situations where you want to combine music with awareness of your environment.

Design
The unusual design is one of the most important features of the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. The earbuds are not inserted into the ear canal, but rather attached to the outer ear using the flexible Flex-Grip system. Part of the earbud sits behind the ear, while the speaker is positioned in front of the ear canal. The ear canal itself remains completely unobstructed.
- Open-ear concept
- Cuff-shaped construction
- Flex-Grip system for a secure hold
- No silicone ear tip required in the ear canal
- Approximately 6.5 grams in weight per earbud
- Compact charging case
- Physical control button on each earbud
The open design is particularly comfortable for users who find traditional in-ear headphones bothersome. At the same time, conversations, traffic, and other ambient sounds remain easily audible.
Build quality
Bose combines plastic, metal, and silicone to create a flexible yet durable construction. The movable connection point of the Flex-Grip system adapts to different ear shapes and securely holds the two parts of the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds in place.
- Combination of PC-ABS plastic, metal and silicone
- Flexible Flex-Grip construction
- IPX4 certification
- Protection against sweat and splash water
- Robust charging case
- High-quality control buttons
Thanks to IPX4 protection, the earbuds are also suitable for sports and outdoor activities. However, they are not intended for swimming or complete submersion.
Performance
Bose OpenAudio technology is designed to produce a powerful and focused sound despite the open design. Sound is directed towards the ear canal without sealing it off, allowing the surrounding environment to remain audible. The Ultra Open Earbuds intentionally do not feature active noise cancellation.
- Bose OpenAudio technology
- Bose Immersive Audio
- Still mode for a spatially fixed soundstage
- Motion mode with head movement adaptation
- Auto Volume for automatic volume adjustment
- Bluetooth 5.3
- Bluetooth multipoint
- Snapdragon Sound
- aptX Adaptive with compatible Snapdragon sound devices
- AAC and SBC
- Adjustable equalizer via the Bose app
- Integrated microphones for phone calls
In everyday life, users benefit from
- Open perception of the environment
- Spatial sound through Immersive Audio
- Surprisingly powerful sound reproduction for an open-ear system.
- High wearing comfort over extended periods
- Quickly switch between two connected devices
- Easy operation via physical buttons
The concept differs significantly from classic in-ear headphones with active noise cancellation. The Ultra Open Earbuds are not designed to block out the outside world, but rather to allow music and ambient sounds to be heard simultaneously.
Battery
With Immersive Audio disabled, the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds offer a playback time of up to seven hours. Using Immersive Audio or Auto Volume reduces the battery life to up to four hours. The included charging case provides additional power for multiple charges.
- Up to 7 hours of music playback
- Up to 4 hours with Immersive Audio or Auto Volume
- Up to 48 hours standby time
- Up to 19.5 additional hours via the charging case
- Charging time for the earbuds is approximately 1 hour.
- USB-C port on the charging case
- Fast charging function
This means the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds offer enough battery life for a normal workday or extended leisure activities. The charging case can then provide additional power on the go.
Conclusion
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds offer an unusual concept for users who want to listen to music without being acoustically isolated from their surroundings. The cuff-shaped Flex-Grip design leaves the ear canal completely open while providing a secure and comfortable fit. Bose OpenAudio and Immersive Audio deliver impressive sound reproduction for open-ear headphones, while Bluetooth multipoint, Snapdragon Sound, and the Bose app complement the features nicely. Active noise cancellation is not included due to the design. For those who want to remain aware of their surroundings while listening to music and don’t like wearing traditional in-ear headphones in their ear canal, the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds offer an interesting premium alternative.
