Samsung’s Exynos-based smartphones had a bad reputation when it came to standby power consumption – their modems tended to use more battery than the modems in Snapdragon-based Galaxy smartphones. But Samsung LSI may have finally solved the problem.

The M2700 modem, used in some Samsung Galaxy S27 models alongside the Exynos 2700 chipset, promises higher energy efficiency, according to an insider leak obtained by The Elec. “I’ve heard that the M2700 achieves equivalent or even better performance than competing products through voltage adjustments and other measures,” said an industry representative quoted in the leak.

This is interesting because the M2700 is manufactured using Samsung’s same 4nm process as the modem in the Galaxy S26 models with the Exynos 2600 processor. This modem is called the Exynos Modem 5410, but Samsung reportedly plans to abandon this designation and use the M series for its modems in the future.

Despite sharing the same technology architecture, the M2700 modem in the Samsung Galaxy S27 series is more energy-efficient, and thanks to a miniaturized optical chip, Samsung was able to reduce the chip area by 4%. The new modem also offers new features: it now supports Release 18 instead of 3GPP Release 17 and improves NNN (nearest network) capabilities (for satellite communication).

Looking ahead, the M2800 modem used in the Galaxy S28 models will be upgraded to a 2nm process. This will serve two purposes: firstly, to further improve energy efficiency, and secondly, to free up 4nm manufacturing capacity, which Samsung intends to use for the lucrative HBM memory for AI servers. Samsung uses the 4nm process to manufacture the base logic die, which forms the bottom layer of the HBM memory stack.

Samsung LSI has improved its design and is pushing Samsung DX to use more of it in the flagship Galaxy S series. There is reportedly an ongoing debate about whether the Exynos 2700 will be used in the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra.
