Xiaomi 17 series comes this month with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip
Xiaomi has announced that it will skip the 16 series and instead go straight to the 17 series to avoid sounding older than the new Apple iPhone 17 series. In a Weibo post, Xiaomi President Lu Weibing announced that the Xiaomi 17 series will launch later this month. The product lineup includes the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.
The Xiaomi 17 series will be the first to use Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. Lu Weibing also pointed out that the base model will offer several improvements without a price increase. The Xiaomi 15 was launched in China at a starting price of 4,499 CNY (537 euros/630 US dollars).
The Xiaomi 17 Pro is expected to be the most powerful among the compact camera phones, while the 17 Pro Max will be Xiaomi’s new top-of-the-line model.
Recent rumors suggest that the upcoming Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will feature a second display on the back. The base model is rumored to feature a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED panel with 1.5K resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. A 7,000 mAh battery and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the display are also possible.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to power the Xiaomi 17
Qualcomm has just confirmed the name for its next-generation flagship chipset, and it won’t necessarily follow in the footsteps of last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. The upcoming chip will be called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, although there has only been one Elite generation so far.
It appears that Qualcomm is returning to its original naming scheme for the Snapdragon 8 series, which began in 2021 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. From then on, we got the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in 2022, followed by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, which would have become the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 would be the fifth chipset in the series and is, as Qualcomm puts it, “an evolution of its established framework” rather than a complete change. Qualcomm will unveil the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii, beginning on September 23.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is expected to use custom Oryon CPU cores, with a Prime CPU core clocked at 4.6 GHz. The “for Galaxy” or Extreme Edition version will reach up to 4.7 GHz. Qualcomm’s upcoming chip is also rumored to feature a new GPU, rumored to be clocked at 1.2 GHz, and achieve a record-breaking AnTuTu score between 4.2 and 4.4 million. The chip itself will be manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm N3p process.
