The Apple iPhone Air features a 3D-printed USB-C port made of titanium. According to Apple, this port offers three advantages over one manufactured using a conventional forging process: It is thinner, stronger, and uses 33% less material, making it more environmentally friendly.

3D printing for metal is also known as additive metal manufacturing. This is a process in which objects are manufactured layer by layer from metal powder based on a CAD model.

Apple iPhone Air only with USB 2 speed

Despite this manufacturing innovation, the USB-C port for wired data transfer is limited to outdated USB 2 speeds of up to 480 Mbps.

According to Apple’s announcement, the titanium case for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and higher-end models of the Apple Watch Series 11 will also be manufactured using a 3D printing process that uses half as much raw material as previous generations of each device.
