The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and the Galaxy Z Flip7 are the thinnest and lightest foldable devices in their respective categories to date. Time for Samsung to talk a bit about the challenges, problems, and solutions in the design process.

According to the company, since 2019 and the first Galaxy Fold, it has pursued the goal of offering users large displays in a pocket-friendly device. Screens have become larger over the years, and smartphones have become thinner and lighter – the battery of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 is denser, offering 300 mAh more capacity while being lighter. The smartphone itself is 6.5 mm thin when opened and 13.7 mm thin when closed. Inside is an ultra-high-density circuit board, ensuring no wasted space.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is almost half as thick as the original Galaxy Fold, but has a wider, lighter screen and a new aspect ratio of 21: 9 for the cover display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 with a completely new hinge

his Armor Flexhine hinge of the third generation is 27 % thinner and 43 % lighter than that of Galaxy Z Fold6. Thinner, critical rotating and supporting elements make the hinge smaller without suffering its stability. New alloy components increase the extension limit by over 14 %, so that the hinge repeated folds can withstand better. Separate support and rotating functions ensure additional stability, and a further open wing plate ensures a flatter screen with fewer wrinkles.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 has Samsung’s thinning flexhine so far, the 29 % slimmer is than that of the Galaxy Z Flip6. The Flip7 also has the unique Infinity Cover display from edge to edge and the display edges have shrunk from 3.94 mm to only 1.25 mm. The flip7 has the thinnest edges of all foldable devices of all time.

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is 39 % thinner, while the ultra -thin glass (UTG) on the top is 50 % thicker than with Z Fold6, “for a smoother, less visible fold and improved performance”.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 also has the first 200 MP main camera in a foldable cell phone, which was made possible by a complete structural redesign. The display of the FOLD7 now consists of Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, and frame and hinge coverage were upgraded to Advanced Armor Aluminum, which is 10 % more robust than the aluminum used in Fold6.
