After iPhone 17 Pro scratches: Apple modifies MagSafe stand
Apple has quietly added a protective silicone ring to its MagSafe charging stations in its Apple Stores following reports of fingerprints on some iPhone 17 series displays, reports the French website Consomac.
The move comes after Apple last month confirmed that worn MagSafe chargers in retail stores appear to be leaving scratches on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. There have also been similar reports of scratches on the iPhone Air.
Apple stated that the marks were actually material transfer from the stand to the phone and could be removed by cleaning. The company also pointed out that other models, such as the iPhone 16, are also affected by the issue.
It is currently unclear whether the change in store display is limited to France, where the Consomac report originates, or whether it is merely a snapshot of a broader change across all Apple retail stores worldwide.
iPhone 17 Pro with normal wear and tear
Separately, Apple has responded to concerns about scratches on the camera module of the iPhone 17 Pro models. The company stated that the edges have similar properties to the aluminum casings of other Apple devices, such as MacBooks, and will therefore show normal wear over time.
The concerns arose, among other things, based on an iPhone 17 Pro teardown by the repair experts at iFixit. This teardown was conducted, as usual, in the same month, shortly after the release of the iPhone 17 series. Whether wear and tear within this period is normal and appropriate is something everyone has to decide for themselves.
