Apple iPhone 17 with 6.3-inch display and ProMotion is here

The Apple iPhone 17, featuring a larger 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display and ProMotion technology for the first time on a non-Pro model, is here. The new device features ProMotion’s adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and an Always-On Display that displays the time, widgets, and live activity even when not in use. If necessary, the display can also be efficiently dimmed to 1 Hz.

The Apple iPhone 17 also benefits from Ceramic Shield 2, a new coating that offers three times the scratch resistance of the previous generation while reducing glare. The display achieves a maximum brightness of 3,000 nits outdoors – the highest ever on an iPhone – and doubles the contrast outdoors.

Center Stage Front Camera
Perhaps the most striking new feature on the Apple iPhone 17 is the Center Stage front camera, which Apple calls “the best front camera yet.” It’s the first square front-facing camera sensor on the iPhone, offering a wider field of view and higher resolution of up to 18 MP for photos. Users can now capture photos and videos in portrait or landscape mode while holding their device vertically. For selfies in landscape format, rotating the phone is no longer necessary.

For group shots, Center Stage uses artificial intelligence to automatically expand the field of view and can switch from portrait to landscape orientation to capture everyone in the frame. The feature also enables ultra-stabilized 4K HDR video recording and introduces Dual Capture, allowing simultaneous recording with the front and rear cameras.

The rear camera system of the Apple iPhone 17 has also been redesigned and features 48 MP sensors for the first time. The main camera features a built-in 2x optical-quality telephoto lens, described as “two cameras in one.” A new 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera offers up to four times the resolution of the previous generation, improving both wide-angle shots and macro photography capabilities.

Photographic styles have been enhanced with next-generation processing that better detects skin tones and adjusts colors, highlights, and shadows in real time. With iOS 26, the Apple iPhone 17 also features the new “Bright” style, which brightens skin tones and adds vibrancy to images.

The Apple iPhone 17’s video capabilities support 4K 60fps Dolby Vision with features like Cinematic Mode and Action Mode. The device records Spatial Audio for an immersive listening experience, while Audio Mix allows users to adjust the sound after recording to amplify voices and reduce ambient noise.
A19 chip in 3 nanometers
Under the hood, the A19 chip based on third-generation 3-nanometer technology delivers a significant performance boost. According to Apple, the 6-core CPU is 1.5 times faster than the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13, while the 5-core GPU is more than twice as fast as the A15 Bionic. Neural accelerators are integrated into each GPU core to support generative AI models on the device.
The battery life of the Apple iPhone 17 has also improved, now reaching up to 30 hours of video playback, eight hours more than the iPhone 16. This improvement is reportedly due to the efficiency of the A19 chip and the advanced power management in iOS 26. A new Adaptive Power Mode learns typical battery consumption patterns and intelligently saves power when needed.
Charging speeds have also been improved: With an optional high-wattage USB-C power adapter, the device can be charged to 50 percent in 20 minutes.
Apple also introduced the N1 chip, a new custom wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity, while improving the performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop.
