Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 receives Qi 2.1 certification

The Galaxy S25 phones were the first to adopt Qi 2.1, and the foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 will follow in their footsteps.

The Wireless Power Consortium, which manages the Qi standards for wireless charging, has certified the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7. It officially supports Qi 2.1. However, the WPC obscures some information here. For example, according to the WPC entry, the device only supports the Basic Power Profile (BPP) at 5 watts, which sounds extremely unlikely. According to the list, the Galaxy Z Fold6 supports the Extended Power Profile (EPP) with 15 watts, and we assume that the successor will achieve at least that much charging power.

With Qi 2.1, new profiles for cases were introduced called Magnetic Cover Power Enhancement (MCPE) and Magnetic Cover Power Magnet (MCPM). As the name suggests, both are based on magnets, but differ in one important respect. MCPM is intended for smartphones with integrated magnets – additional “feedthrough magnets” in the case amplify the magnetic field and thus ensure a stronger attachment. MCPE is designed for BPP and EPP smartphones without magnets and enables operation in Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) mode, the magnetic version of Qi.

The WPC, however, doesn’t list anything about BPP on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, which can only be a mistake. The model number SM-D637U, by the way, seems to be the closest deviation. The WPC doesn’t seem to use Samsung’s standard designations. For example, the Z Fold6 is called “SC-55E,” the Z Fold Special Edition is called “SM-D269N,” and the Galaxy Z Fold5 is called “SM-D617S.” None of these models correspond to Samsung’s “SM-F” model numbers for its foldable devices.

The placeholder image “Coming soon!” (“Coming soon”) on the page makes it clear that the page is incomplete. However, we hope Samsung isn’t adopting the full magnetic experience with the Galaxy Z Fold7. It’s more likely that Samsung will follow the Galaxy S25 strategy with magnetic cases.
