Apple AR Glasses on the verge of being discontinued
According to a new report by Apple expert and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple AR Glasses are on the verge of being discontinued. These would have been paired with Macs and would not have worked independently like the Vision Pro headset. The company reportedly canceled the project this week. The device would have looked like regular glasses but would have been equipped with built-in projectors that would display information, images and videos in the field of view of each eye.
Interestingly, Apple has been working on incorporating lenses whose hue changes depending on what the user is doing, basically like a status setting in a chat app. The project was apparently seen as a way forward for Apple after the Vision Pro’s sales disappointed.
Compared to the Vision Pro, the Apple AR Glasses were intended to be suitable for everyday use. Despite this, finding the right technology at a reasonable price proved too difficult. For this reason, the company decided to simply give up.

Meta can breathe a sigh of relief because Apple will not be competing with its smart glasses in the near future. Currently, Meta has the Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, of which the company has already sold over a million units, and is working on an AR version that is scheduled to be released in 2027. If the Apple AR Glasses had also been launched at that time, it would have been a very interesting year for AR equipment in the consumer market. However, this could still be the case, but without Apple’s presence in this area.
Originally, the Apple AR Glasses were intended to be paired with an iPhone. For one thing, this did not provide enough processing power, and for another, the pairing drained the iPhone’s battery quite quickly. At that point, the switch was made to pairing with a Mac. However, the Mac-connected product “performed poorly in tests with executives and the desired functions kept changing,” the report says.
