Sony PlayStation 6: Launch date and price of the PS6 remain unclear
In its latest business report, Sony announced that neither the price nor a release date for the PlayStation 6 has been confirmed. Although the console has not yet been officially unveiled, Sony mentioned that the company is increasing its investments in the “next-gen platform” while simultaneously working on solutions to the global component shortage caused by various global factors.
When asked, Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki explained that rising costs for key components like RAM would impact PlayStation 6 plans. “We haven’t yet decided when we’ll launch the new console or at what price,” Totoki said during the conference call.
“We want to closely monitor and follow the situation. Given the current circumstances, it is expected that storage prices will remain very high in the 2027 financial year as well, due to a continued supply shortage. Based on this assumption, we must therefore carefully consider our next steps.”
According to an analyst, the Sony PlayStation 6 will not be released until 2028
One industry analyst predicted that the PS6 might not be released until 2028, which would make the current PlayStation generation the longest yet.
Totoki added that Sony is exploring ways to best reduce costs for the PlayStation 6, including “changing business models” as a possible strategy. After raising the price of the PS5 hardware earlier this year, Sony has seen a 46% year-over-year drop in revenue. Only 1.5 million units were sold in the three months ending March 31, bringing total PS5 sales to 93.7 million units, slightly behind the PS4 at the same point in its life cycle.
Sony also pointed out that the majority of game sales are now digital, and despite a massive loss of $565 million to Bungie, the operating result of the games division increased by 12%.
