PlayStation fans have been waiting for news about the PlayStation 6 release date for quite some time. In fact, six years have already passed since the PS5 was released in 2020. In a recent profile of Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki in the Wall Street Journal, the CEO finally spoke officially about the PS6’s release date.

Unfortunately, those waiting for an official announcement from Sony will be disappointed: According to Totoki, Sony has not yet set a firm release date. Some analysts had previously predicted that the PlayStation 6 could be released sometime next year. However, it’s possible that the release could be further delayed for economic reasons. In fact, both Xbox and Sony have stated that they considered postponing console releases due to the AI-driven memory shortage, in order to keep prices down.

PS6 vs. AI data centers

Due to the increased demand for computing power from AI companies and their data centers, RAM costs have risen rapidly, and RAM has become scarce. As a result, both Xbox and Sony have raised prices for consoles and accessories over the past two years. Should Sony not release the PS6 until 2027, the console’s price could become prohibitively expensive, especially since a new PS5 is currently available for around $650 and the PS4 Pro for around $750.

We have summarized all currently known information in our PS6 article and analyzed possible reasons for a delay in the release.

This might not be the news PlayStation fans were waiting for, but a lower price for the PS6 could ultimately benefit both consumers and Sony itself, even if it means waiting another year. Because if the Sony console is unaffordable, that’s bad for everyone. While there’s still a possibility the PlayStation 6 won’t be released until 2027, a concrete date has yet to be announced.
