Samsung is testing a 20,000 mAh silicon-carbon battery
Recently, we’ve seen a real boom in smartphones from Chinese brands with batteries of 8,000 mAh or more. Now, an insider claims that Samsung SDI is testing a massive 20,000 mAh dual-cell battery for smartphones.
Samsung isn’t exactly known for setting any records when it comes to battery capacity. Even its latest flagship, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, only has a 5,000 mAh battery. However, according to an insider, the Korean company’s battery division, SDI, is currently testing a dual-cell silicon-carbon battery with an enormous capacity of 20,000 mAh.
Samsung dual-cell battery fails test
According to the source, the dual-cell battery consists of a 12,000 mAh cell with a thickness of 6.3 mm and an 8,000 mAh cell with a thickness of 4 mm. In testing, the battery reportedly achieved an impressive screen-on time of 27 hours and around 960 charging cycles per year.
However, the tests reportedly were unsuccessful. The battery is said to have swollen shortly after the tests were completed, raising concerns about its long-term stability. Another source adds that the 8,000 mAh cell swelled from 4 mm to 7.2 mm in thickness.
However, this information should be treated with caution, as it comes from a less than reliable source. It is also relatively likely that SDI develops and tests the battery for electric cars and not for smartphones.
