Samsung Project Moohan XR headset with Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip tested
Samsung is working on several XR devices, most notably the Samsung Project Moohan XR headset, which is being developed in collaboration with Google. The Koreans also have two more irons in the fire: Project Haean and Project Jinju, Samsung’s first smart glasses.
These devices have already appeared in the Geekbench database. The latest model is the Project Moohan headset with the model code SM-I610, which is scheduled to launch later this year, possibly under the name Galaxy XR.
As expected, the Samsung Project Moohan XR headset is based on the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, which was specifically designed for XR applications. It features six Cortex-A78C-based cores—two clocked at 2.36 GHz and four clocked at 2.05 GHz. It is coupled with an Adreno 740 GPU. The new chipset of the Nintendo Switch 2 from Nvidia (Tegra T239) also uses eight A78C cores with a clock speed of up to 1.1 GHz.
The chip supports low-latency full-color see-through (12 ms), low-latency Wi-Fi 7 connections, and VR-specific features such as foveated rendering and Space Warp. The latter extrapolates missing frames without waiting for the GPU (or the connected PC) to generate new ones. This doubles the frame rate, improves performance, and can reduce motion sickness by reducing perceived latency.
The Samsung Project Moohan XR headset is equipped with 16 GB of RAM and runs Android 14. This is likely the new Android XR OS with a completely redesigned user interface for virtual displays and hand controls, which also runs on the new Gemini Smart Glasses.
There’s also a device called the Samsung SM-I130, which also appeared in a Geekbench test. This is likely either Project Haean or Project Jinju. It uses the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, also with 16 GB of RAM and Android 14. This means that the Haean and Jinju will be just as powerful as the Moohan—which is surprising, since they’re supposed to have thin, glasses-like frames, unlike the relatively bulky Moohan glasses.
Neither the Korean company nor Google have announced a specific launch date for the Samsung Project Moohan XR headset, but we could learn more at the upcoming Unpacked event for the new Galaxy foldables.
