Apple iPhone Ultra impresses in initial tests

The Apple iPhone Ultra is expected to cost from $2,000, but it won't have a telephoto lens. Otherwise, there was little to complain about.

Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone Ultra is receiving positive feedback from the few who have already gotten their hands on the device. However, the camera setup might leave something to be desired for some users, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

In his latest newsletter, “Power On,” Gurman writes that the first testers of the Apple iPhone Ultra praised its compact size in a pocket, as well as the feel and robustness of the hinge mechanism. The new, iPad-like app layouts, which make optimal use of the larger internal display when unfolded, were also commended by the testers.

Apple iPhone Ultra: $2,000 but no telephoto lens

Besides productivity, video, and gaming, the Apple iPhone Ultra is also well-suited as a camera viewfinder, according to Gurman. However, the device lacks a telephoto lens, which didn’t sit well with Apple given the expected price of $2,000 and up. Instead, it features a dual-camera system on the back, consisting of a 48-megapixel main camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens.

Furthermore, the Apple iPhone Ultra will use Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID in the display. This is a compromise Apple reportedly made to limit the thickness to approximately 4.5 mm when unfolded. However, as Gurman notes, some users might actually prefer this old-school solution. In addition, the foldable device, just like Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Z Fold8, is expected to have a 5.5-inch external display and, when unfolded, an approximately 7.8-inch internal display, resulting in a wide, book-like design.

Apple’s first foldable smartphone is expected to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at a launch event on or around September 9th. Reports indicate that the price for larger storage capacities could even exceed $2,500, and that availability at launch might be limited to the US.
