Apple iPhone Ultra production increased to 10 million units
Apple has instructed its suppliers to prepare to produce around 10 million foldable iPhone Ultras this year. A few months ago, the company had anticipated around 7 to 8 million units, reports Nikkei Asia. Apple has already ordered parts for approximately 80 million smartphones for the second half of 2026, including components for the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone. According to the report, the company’s total production in 2026 is expected to exceed 220 million units.
Apple’s purchasing power is said to have given the company a better starting position than competitors such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, who, faced with an industry-wide memory shortage, have each reduced their annual production targets to below 100 million units.
Some suppliers have reportedly been told that they should expect orders for up to 85 million new iPhones in the second half of 2026, with Apple asking them to reserve components for the iPhone 17 for the upcoming iPhone 18 series.
Apple iPhone Ultra hinge problems solved
The technical problems related to the hinge of the foldable Apple iPhone Ultra appear to have been resolved, but this increases the likelihood of initially low shipments after the market launch. Larger production runs are not expected to begin until later this year.
Apple raised prices for MacBooks and iPads last month due to increased component costs, but the iPhone 17 series has so far been spared a price hike. If this remains the case, Apple is expected to use the launch of the new devices as an opportunity to raise prices across its entire product line. IDC forecasts an average retail price of $2,500 for the foldable Apple iPhone Ultra, with storage variants potentially costing up to $3,000.
Rumors suggest the Apple iPhone Ultra will feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external display. It is also expected to offer Touch ID instead of Face ID, an A20 chip, and Apple’s C2 modem. The device is expected to launch in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models.
